BLE IoT App That Connected 50,000 Users to 10,000+ Environmental Sensors with 99.2% Uptime — case study visual

Operational outcome

IoT monitoring reliability at scale

Mobile app, sensor connectivity, and telemetry handling were hardened for continuous environmental monitoring.

Measured result

50,000 users supported, 10,000+ sensors connected, and 99.2% uptime.

Overview

The project at a glance

Environmental monitoring used to require $5,000+ industrial sensors and specialized software that only facilities managers understood. Klaro's founders wanted anyone with a smartphone to monitor air quality, temperature, and humidity in their home, office, or workspace — no PhD required. We built a Flutter app with deep Bluetooth Low Energy integration that pairs with affordable wireless sensors in under 30 seconds. Real-time dashboards update every 5 seconds. Intelligent alerts catch air quality drops before you feel them. Six months after launch: 50,000+ active users, 10,000+ connected sensors, and 1 billion+ environmental data points processed with 99.2% BLE connectivity.

What the engagement had to achieve

  1. Replace $5,000+ industrial monitoring with a $29 consumer sensor and smartphone app
  2. Achieve 99%+ Bluetooth Low Energy connectivity across iOS and Android
  3. Process real-time environmental data with sub-5-second update latency
  4. Support 15+ different sensor types from multiple manufacturers
  5. Maintain 50+ hour sensor battery life through power-optimized BLE protocols

The story

The challenge, and how we solved it

What was at risk

The Challenge

Environmental monitoring was stuck in the industrial age. Professional air quality sensors cost $5,000+ and required specialized installation. Consumer 'smart home' devices showed you a number but couldn't explain what it meant or alert you when conditions changed. Most people had no idea what they were breathing — and even those who cared couldn't find an accessible solution. The few apps that existed were buggy, drained phone batteries, and lost Bluetooth connections constantly. Klaro's founders had the sensors; they needed an app that actually worked.

How we responded

The Solution

We built Klaro as a native Flutter app with industrial-grade BLE reliability in a consumer-friendly package. The pairing flow takes 30 seconds — scan, tap, done. Real-time dashboards show current conditions with color-coded health indicators anyone can understand. Threshold-based alerts notify users before air quality drops become dangerous. Historical charts reveal patterns: the CO2 spike every afternoon, the humidity drop when the heater kicks on. And we achieved 99.2% BLE connectivity by implementing robust reconnection logic that handles the chaos of real-world wireless environments.

Deliverables

What we built

The concrete capabilities designed, built, and shipped in this engagement — each one targeting a specific problem identified above.

Core deliverable

BLE Sensor Synchronization: 30-Second Pairing, 99.2% Uptime

Bluetooth Low Energy integration that actually works. Scan for nearby sensors, tap to pair, and you're monitoring in under 30 seconds. The app maintains connections across 15+ sensor types from multiple manufacturers. Smart reconnection logic handles signal drops, phone sleep states, and multi-device conflicts — achieving 99.2% connectivity where competitor apps struggle to hit 80%.

  • 30-second pairing (vs. 10+ minutes for industrial systems)
  • 99.2% BLE connectivity reliability
  • 15+ sensor types supported

Real-Time Environmental Dashboard: 5-Second Updates

Live updating dashboard showing current air quality, temperature, humidity, CO2, and VOC levels with automatic refresh every 5 seconds. Color-coded health indicators translate raw numbers into actionable insight — green (good), yellow (moderate), red (take action). No environmental science degree required.

Made environmental data accessible to 50,000 non-technical users

  • 5-second update latency
  • Color-coded health indicators
  • Multi-metric view (AQI, temp, humidity, CO2, VOC)

Intelligent Threshold Alerts: Catch Problems Before You Feel Them

Configurable push notifications trigger when environmental conditions cross user-defined thresholds. CO2 above 1000 ppm? Get alerted before the headaches start. Humidity below 30%? Know before your skin dries out. The system learns from historical patterns and can warn about developing trends, not just threshold violations.

Users report catching air quality issues 2-3 hours earlier

  • Customizable thresholds per metric
  • Push notifications within 10 seconds of violation
  • Trend-based early warnings

Historical Analysis: Patterns You Never Knew Existed

Detailed data history with interactive charts showing trends over hours, days, weeks, and months. Discover the CO2 spike every day at 3pm (time to open a window). See how humidity drops every time the heater runs. Export data to CSV for deeper analysis. The app stores 12 months of history per sensor.

Users identified recurring environmental issues within first week

  • 12 months of historical data per sensor
  • Interactive charts (hour/day/week/month views)
  • CSV export for external analysis

Multi-Sensor Hub: One App, All Your Environments

Manage multiple sensors across different locations from a single dashboard. Home office, bedroom, basement, garage — monitor them all from one app. Device grouping lets you organize by location or purpose. Aggregate views show overall environmental health across all monitored spaces.

Average user monitors 3.2 sensors across multiple rooms

  • Unlimited sensors per account
  • Location-based grouping
  • Aggregate health scores across spaces

Beyond the launch

Lasting improvements

The changes that keep paying off after the engagement ended.

  1. 50,000+ active users with zero paid acquisition — pure word-of-mouth growth
  2. 10,000+ environmental sensors connected across 40+ countries
  3. 99.2% BLE connectivity — 23% higher than industry average
  4. 1 billion+ environmental data points processed

  6. 15+ sensor types supported from 8 different manufacturers
  7. 50+ hour sensor battery life through power-optimized BLE protocols
I used to get headaches every afternoon and blamed it on screen time. Klaro showed me my home office CO2 levels were hitting 1500 ppm by 3pm — way above safe limits. Now I open a window when the app alerts me at 1000 ppm, and the headaches are gone. This thing paid for itself in a week.

We deployed Klaro sensors across 12 classrooms to monitor CO2 and humidity. The real-time dashboard lets facilities staff respond before conditions affect students. We've seen a 40% reduction in 'stuffy classroom' complaints since installing the system. The teachers love the historical data for understanding patterns.

Do You Know What You're Breathing Right Now?

Most people have no idea. Klaro users do — and they catch air quality issues hours before they feel the effects. 50,000 people already monitor their environments with a $29 sensor and the Klaro app. What's in your air?
